Cargill acquired Freeman's of Newent in 2008, a primary chicken processing business that began in 1953 supplying local butchers and now spanning independent butchers, UK retail and food service markets. Employing approximately 120 people, Freeman's is the smaller of Cargill’s UK poultry processing sites, processing approximately 350,000 birds per week.
Cargill’s acquisition of Freeman's strengthened the company’s existing fresh poultry business by adding the supply of Free Range poultry to the existing ACP and RSPCA approved regimes processed at its Hereford site. The movement further demonstrated Cargill’s desire to support the UK agricultural industry and to continue to grow its supply base in line with market demand.
