Cargill operates a primary and further processing chicken plant in Newent, Gloucestershire. Over 270 people are employed at the site, which was acquired from Freeman’s of Newent in 2008.
Cargill currently processes approximately 400,000 birds a week at our Newent facility, using an electrical pre-slaughter stunning process which stuns the birds but which does not kill them. For certified Halal products a process certified Halal by The Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence and the Halal Food Authority is used. The chicken is then cleaned, chilled and prepared as fresh and further processed chicken for the restaurant, retail and food supply business.
Cargill’s acquisition of Freeman’s of Newent strengthened the company’s existing UK fresh poultry business by adding the supply of Free Range poultry to Cargill’s portfolio.
